Memory and Resource Management

Understanding Resource Use

Abaqus Data

Abaqus uses memory and disk resources during analysis. Understanding resource use helps optimize performance.

Requirements and Considerations

  • Large models require more memory
  • Parallel execution can reduce memory pressure
  • Adequate disk space is essential for temporary files

Resource Management Parameters

Memory Management Parameters

input

Syntax: input = memory_specification

Description: Specifies the maximum amount of memory or maximum percentage of physical memory during input file processing.

Example:

input = 80%
input = 2GB

memory

Syntax: memory = memory_specification

Description: Specifies the maximum amount of memory or maximum percentage of physical memory during the analysis phase.

Example:

memory = 80%
memory = 4GB

Disk Management Parameters

scratch

Syntax: scratch = directory_path

Description: Specifies the directory for temporary files.

Example:

scratch = /tmp/abaqus
scratch = C:\TEMP\abaqus

Guidelines for Memory Settings

When setting memory for datacheck analysis execution, consider the following factors:

  • Number of elements and nodes in the model
  • Element type and complexity
  • Whether user subroutines are present

Typical Memory Settings for Datacheck Analysis

Degrees of Freedom Memory Recommendation
< 100,000 1-2 GB
100,000 - 500,000 2-4 GB
500,000 - 1,000,000 4-8 GB
> 1,000,000 8 GB or more

Abaqus/Standard Analysis

Guidelines for Memory Settings

Setting Memory on Single-User Machines

For single-user machines, it is recommended to allocate 80-90% of physical memory to Abaqus.

Setting Memory on Multi-User Machines

For multi-user machines, adjust memory allocation based on the number of concurrent users and job requirements.

Setting Memory When Using Queues

When submitting jobs through a queue system, consider memory limits for queue jobs.

Example:

memory = 60%
